Conformity definition
A type of social influence involving a change in belief or behaviour to fit into a group
Compliance
Accepting a groups views publicly but not privately. Motivated by the desire to fit in with a group
Internalisation
Accepting a group’s views both publicly and privately because the individual has accepted the group’s views as correct
Identification
Motivated by the desire to be associated with a certain person or group and is done by adopting the group’s attitudes and views
Normative social influence
Conforming to be liked by a group. Motivated by the need to fit in and likely to involve compliance and identification
Informational social influence
The tendency to rely on group wisdom when making a decision. Motivated by the desire to be right and likely to involve internalisation
