Types and display of data Flashcards
define the likert scale
when a progressive set of options is assigned a value
eg: rate x from 1-5
define nominal data
categories ar assigned a value as a name
define interval data
data with which the gaps between values can be gauged and measured
define raito data
there is an absolute zero snd data can be compared as it is definite
define ordinal data
categories are assigned clearly but the space in-between the categories is undefined
what kind of average is used to for stat analysis when using normally distributed data
the mean
what is used to for stat analysis when using abnormally distributed data
the median
describe a normal distribution
a bell shaped curve with the mode mean and median situated on the peak of the curve
describe a negative skew
when the mean is skewed to the negative values and the mode is skewed to the right (higher values) of the x axis.
describe a positive skew
the mean is skewed to the right and the mode to the left of the x axis
describe a bimodal distribution
two peaks are present due to there being two modes
describe a J shaped distribution
an exponential growth that does not decline
describe an inverted U shaped curve
similar to normal distribution but the peak is lower and the data is more spread- looks squashed
describe a rectangular distribution
the peak is reached via a vertical rise, it then plateaus and maintains this shape for a while, the fall is also vertical
