Type I Diabetes Flashcards
1
Q
CD3+ T-Cells
A
Immune cells responsible for invading B islets in pancreas and causing DMI
2
Q
Age of I DM
A
Typically patients present from 5-7 years or near puberty.
3
Q
DMI Environmental Risk Factors
A
- Vitamin D
- Viruses
- Gut Microbiome
- Hygiene hypothesis
4
Q
DMI Early Warning
A
Autoantibody response precedes symptoms from months to years before symptomatic DMI.
Individuals who develop more than 1 autoantbody will go on to develop diabetes. Can be in a state of ‘pre diabetes.’
5
Q
Genetic Predisposition DMI
A
Two HLA haplotypes conferring the greatest susceptibility: DRBI Susceptibility also effected by: PTPN22 CTLA4 IL2RA
6
Q
Adaptive acting against Beta Cells
A
CD4_ Th1 T Cells (release IFN that recruits tissue/cell destruction)
CD8+ T Cells: Directly cytotoxic.
7
Q
NOD Mice
A
Many similarities to Human:
- Associated with pancreas-specific autoantibodies
- Autoreactive CD4 and CD8 T-Cells.
