what happens when Germany invades Belgium?
They took over the country and eventually invaded France, and the western front turned into trench warfare.
what is trench warfare?
each side dug protective trenches into the earth from which they could emerge to attack each other. the space between the trenches is called no man’s land.
what happened during trench warfare?
it was very cold and people lived there for months. Germany then confronted the British and French armies. (battle of the Marne and Ypres begin)
what happened on the eastern front?
Russia invaded Germany (Austria-Hungary helped as well). Germany seized most of Russia’s territory including Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania. German supplies fell short and the Russians were successful.
why did Russia pull out of the war?
The political turmoil that followed led to the Russian Revolution and Russia’s withdrawal from the war in 1917.

machine guns, poison gas, and armies deployed in airplanes. the German submarines sunk enemy warships and merchant vessels. the germans developed their submarine to deploy more than 100 of the vessels during the war.

what was the Armenian genocide?
the Ottoman government began a systematic program to seize Armenian land and deport Armenians to Turkey. Muslim rulers feared that they were potential traitors who would betray the empire if they had a chance to win autonomy.
what was the balance of power shift after world war one?
the US emerged as the world leader. Austria-Hungary split into smaller states. Turkey became an independent state, and although sympathetic to the allies, they did not participate in ww1.

The US, GB, France, and Italy led the negotiations. They were known as the “big four.” the goal was to establish long-term peace in Europe. (didn’t invite Germany)

They had to disarm, accept responsibility for the war and pay a total amounting to 37 billion dollars. they also had to give up 10 percent of their land and all of their foreign colonies.

Mussolini welcomed Hitler as an ally. Germany and Italy declared the Pact of Steel and Japan later joined. They became known as the axis powers.
