Anagnorisis
Greek for recognition, when something essential is made clear like a ‘reveal’
Eg: revelation of Viola’s true identity
Anarchy
Anarchy means NO RULE
Anarchic situation- one where there are no rules or laws
Androgynous
Partly male and female not clearly of one sex or another
Bathos
An anti climax, a buildup followed by a let down
Achieved by having something grand followed by something very ordinary eg: a queen walked upto her throne sat solemnly and fell asleep
Blazon
Description of ladys beauties
Catechism
Question and answer session, helping someone understand the main principles of religion
Chorus
Not part of the action but commenting on it. Choric character is one who does this
Denouement
‘Un knotting’ climactic ending of the action where plot strands are brought together
Homosocial
Strong bond, not necessarily sexual
Latinate diction
Words in english that come from latin. Often long and abstract. Latinate words are in italics for sebastian.
Satire
Comedy which draws our attention to a type of character using exaggeration to indicate flaws. In orsino/ malvolio Shakespeare my be satirising passionate lovers and puritans
Syllogism
Sequence of 3 statements where the third follows logically from the first two. Eg
All elephants are pink. Nellie is an elephant. Nellie is pink
Synaesthesia
Imagery which mixes different sense impressions, a ‘cold colour’ mixes senses of touch and sight
Tricolon
Group of 3 elements in a sentence, such as 3 statements eg: i came, i saw, i conquered
Register
Kind of language used in particular social situation eg: elevated language would be usual register for courtly scene
