Tutorial 4 - physio techniques in ICU Flashcards
adverse effects of suctioning
hypoxia
trauma to airway
cardiac arrhythmias
infection
what are the 2 routes for suctioning
intubated - open + close
non-intubated - naso/oropharyngeal - open
What can be done to minimize adverse effects
hypoxia - hyperoxygenate
trauma - select proper catheter size. max 15 secs. do not push past occlusion
cardiac arrhythmias - monitor PR,ECG
Infection - sterile technique
what is a minitracheostomy
a small tracheostomy without a cuff,, inserted for easy clearance of secretions
Define MHI
application of a larager than tidal volume breath with an anesthetic or resuscitation circuit
why do we use MHI
improve gas/secretion movement
treat segmental collapse
encourage respiratory muscle use when synchronized with the patient
what are 5 CIs to MHI
pneumothorax w/o intercostal catheter # ribs/flail unstable CVS high peep high ICP acute asthma
