National policies improving access to education
What is the psychological aspect of health promotion?
The complex relationship between behaviour, knowledge, attitudes and beliefs. Activities start from an individual attitude t health and readiness to change
What is health education?
An activity involving communication with individuals or groups aimed at changing knowledge, beliefs, attitudes and behaviour in a direction which is conducive to improvements in health
What is health protection?
Activities directed at factors which are beyond the control of the individual. Regulation, olives or voluntary codes of practice aimed at the prevention of ill health or the positive enhancement of well-being
What is empowerment?
The generation of power in those individuals which previously considered themselves to be unable to control situations nor act in the basis of their choices
What are the benefits of empowerment?
An ability to resist social pressure
An ability to utilise effective coping strategies when faced by an unhealthy environment
A heightened consciousness of action
What are the vital signs of quality that is used to assess health promotion?
Does the activity understand and respond to people’s needs fairly?
Is it built upon an identifiable approach to health promotion?
Does it demonstrate a sense of direction and coherence?
Are connections made between settings, individual and community approaches?

What is primary prevention?
Measures taken to prevent the onset or reduce the probability and severity of an illness or injury

What is secondary prevention?
Detection of a disease at an early (preclinical) stage in order to cure, prevent or lessen symptomatology
