Tushar 2.1 - The Nuclear Atom Flashcards
What are the subatomic particles and where are they found
- protons and neutrons in the nucleus
- electrons outside nucleus in shells
Charge and masses of these subatomic particles
Protons: 1+ and 1 (amu)
Neutrons: 0 and 1(amu)
Electron: 1- and 1/2000 (amu)
Symbol for atomic number and mass number and what they mean
Atomic number (Z): number of protons in atom Mass number (A): number of protons and neutrons in atom
What are isotopes
different atoms of the same element with different mass numbers, same number of protons but different number of neutrons
Similarity and difference between isotopes of an element
- isotopes have the same chemical properties (as same # of electrons)
- they have different physical properties (as different masses = move at different speeds)
What is a radioisotope
unstable isotope of an element which releases radiation (breaks down) to become more stable
What is relative atomic mass
average mass of all isotopes of the element relative to one twelfth of the mass of an atom of carbon-12.
How to calculate relative atomic mass
RAM = (mass1 x abundance 1) + (mass2 x abundance2) / 100
