Turning Points: Special Relativity Flashcards
What is an ether?
It is a prediction of a medium for light wave
What was the aim for Michelson-Morley Experiment?
To determine the speed of the Earth’s motion relative to its ether
What did Michelson and Morley design?
Interferometer
What is the procedure for Michelson-Morley experiment?
- Semi-silvered glass block split the beam of monochromatic light into 2 beams
- The light travels at right angles to both mirrors
- The observer sees the interference pattern from 2 beams
- The apparatus is rotated 90 degrees and pattern is observed
In Michelson-Morley experiment, What is the predicted results?
- Pattern would shift
- As path length or speed of light depending on the orientation relative to motion of apparatus so ether exists
In Michelson-Morley experiment, What is the actual results?
- No shift in pattern
- No evidence of ether
- speed of light is invariant
How are bright and dark fringes formed?
Bright fringes formed when two light beams are in phase and vice versa for dark.
How are bright and dark fringes formed?
Bright fringes formed when two light beams are in phase and vice versa for dark.
What is inertial frame of reference?
Those that move in constant velocity relative to each other but frame that is accelerating or rotating is not inertial frame
What are Einstein’s two postulates?
- Speed of light in free space is invariant
- Laws of physics are in same form in all inertial frames
What is t nought (t0)
time that is observed when stationary (proper time)
What is l0
proper length
What is m0
rest mass
