Turning Flashcards
Rotational
cylindrical or disc-like shape in which a cutting tool removes material from a rotating workpiece (drilling is included).
Non-rotational
block-like or plate-like shape achieved by linear motions of the workpieces combined with either rotating or linear tool motions.
Generating
geometry of the workpiece is determined by the feed
trajectory of the cutting tool.
Forming
shape of the workpiece is created by the geometry of the cutting tool.
Turning
is a machining process in which a single-point tool removes material from a workpiece to create external cylindrical and conical surfaces.
Roughing
used to remove large amounts of material using large depth of cuts and slow speeds; requires less time to remove material, though dimensional accuracy and surface finish quality are lost.
Finishing
uses light passes with speeds as fine as necessary to produce the desired finish; One to two passes are usually required to produce a smooth finish.
Toolroom lathe
similar to engine lathe; wide range of speeds and feeds; built for higher accuracy fabricating tools and high precision devices.
Speed lathe
simpler than engine lathe; no carriage or cross-slide assembly; cutting tool is held by operator using a rest; mainly used for wood working, metal spinning or polishing.
Engine lathe
An engine lathe is a type of machinery, shaped horizontally, and it is often used to cut metal. The metal is turned, and the machine uses special cutting tools to create the desired shape.
Chucking machines
machine design without tailstock for regular and irregular part shapes.
Bar machine
long bar stock is fed through the headstock into position and upon completion of a cycle being indexed forward.
Automatic bar machine (single spindle)
one cutting tool is used at a time on a single workpiece
Automatic bar machine (multiple spindle)
multiple parts are machined simultaneously by multiple tools
Turret lathe
allows multiple cutting operations by different cutting tools mounted onto a hexagon main turret which replaces the tailstock; square turret is mounted on the cross-slide.
