Turgor And Plasmolysis Flashcards
What is a hypnotic solution?
if water potential of external solution is less negative than solution inside cell, water flows into cell
What is a hypertonic solution?
if water potential of external solution is more negative than solution inside cell, water flows out of cell
Isotonic
cell has same water potential as surrounding solution, no movement of water
Plant cells in a hypertonic…
solution lose water by osmosis
What happens when the cell loses water
vacuole shrinks and cytoplasm draws away from the cell wall
Plasmolysis
-when vacuole shrinks and cytoplasm draws away from cell wall and cell becomes flaccid(floppy)
Flaccid cells cannot
provide support so when a plant loses too much water and its cells become flaccid, plant wilts
Turgid meaning
when a cell cant take in anymore water, this is important to plants especially seeds because it provides support, maintains shape and holds them upright
