Turbulence Flashcards
Really mix things up!
Inertial subrange
An intermediate range of turbulent scales or wavelengths that is smaller than the energy-containing eddies but larger than viscous eddies. Here, the energy gained from the larger eddies is equal to the net energy lost to the smaller eddies.
Eddy viscosity
The turbulent transfer of momentum by eddies, adding to an internal fluid friction
Molecular viscosity
The transport of mass momentum solely by the random Brownian motion of molecules
The closure problem
When averaging the NS equations, the non-linearity of the equations causes more unknowns than equations
Prandtl mixing length
Description of momentum transfer by Reynold’s stresses - this is about the distance a fluid parcel will keep it’s characteristics before dispersing into a surrounding fluid (analogous to the mean free path in the kinetic theory of gases)
