TurboProps Flashcards
What is added to the core turbojet to make it a turboprop?
A propeller stuck on the front. The turbines, in addition to powering the compressor, go past that to a gear box that moves the prop.
What engine is better for low altitudes and low speeds?
Turboprops
Why do turboprops have a low exhaust velocity?
Because most of the energy is extracted by the power turbine to turn the prop, which generates almost all the thrust. So turboprops only produce a little bit of jet thrust
What two types of turboprop engines are there?
Direct Drive: Compressor and power (prop) turbine are the same turbine
Free Turbine: The compressor turbine and power turbine are seperated.
What engine is the turboshaft (helicopter) similar to?
The turboprop. It differs in the function of the turbine shaft.
