tulving's long term memory Flashcards
1
Q
what is meant by “semantic memory?”
A
- general knowledge and facts
- no personal link
2
Q
how are semantic memories encoded?
A
acoustically
3
Q
what is meant by “episodic memory”?
A
- events that we experience
- personal links
4
Q
where are episodic memories processed?
A
hippocampus
5
Q
where are semantic memories processed?
A
the frontal and temporal cortexes
6
Q
what are tulving’s long term memory theories applications?
A
- it states that in order for episodic memories to be retrieved, cues should be formed at the time of encoding, therefore during eye-witness testimonies, in order to gain a more accurate testimony, police should use cues such as contextual reinstatement in order for the eye-witness to reimagine the scene of the crime
7
Q
how credible is tulvings long term memory theory?
A
- opposing evidence from HM
- HM was asked to draw a star and improved everyday despite ever remembering drawing one, suggesting there is a third LTM store (procedural) which involves skills you do not have to think about to carry out.
8
Q
what is a strength of tulvings long term memory theory?
A
- the research is based off case studies which means that it reflects memory in everyday life, as the research was carried out in the participants natural environments
- however case studies involve brain damaged, vulnerable patients making them unethical to replicate
9
Q
why does tulvings LTM theory have high reliablity?
A
- the brain is studied using brain scans which are credible, objective measures as they can be checked by numerous researchers
