Separation of Powers
an act of vesting the legislative, executive, and judicial powers of government in separate bodies.
Basic powers are distributed or separated among 3 distinct and independent branches of government
Amendment
Adding a law to the constitution
Checks and Balances
A system used to keep the government from getting too powerful in one branch
Federalism
A political system in which power is divided between national and state government
13th Amendment
Abolishment of Slavery
15th Amendment
Ensures voting rights for all citizens
22nd Amendment
Limits the President’s time of service to 4 years. Limits the President to serve 2 terms at most.
Unconstitutional
Not in accordance with a political constitution, especially the US Constitution, or with procedural rules.
Judicial Review
Power of courts to declare acts as “unconstitutional”, illegal, and/or null/void
Electoral College
A body of people representing the states of the US, who formally cast votes for the election of the president and vice president.
Commander in Chief
A head of state or officer in supreme command of a country’s armed forces. (The President)
Rule of Law
The legal principle that law should govern a nation, as opposed to being governed by arbitrary decisions of individual government officials.
Marbury v. Madison
Basis for the exercise of Judicial Review
Gave a gigantic grant of power to the courts
Popular Sovereignty
The doctrine that sovereign power is vested in the people and that those chosen to govern, as trustees of such power, must exercise it in conformity with the general will.
