Why did Henry VIII want to divorce Catherine of Aragon?
-> Because she was not giving him any male heirs. She gave birth to four still - born little boys (All named Henry) and a little girl called Mary (The future “Bloody Mary”).
What were the pros and cons of Henry VIII breaking from Rome?
Pros:
- He will become more powerful as the Pope cannot tell him what to do.
- Only God is above him.
- He makes friends with the Protestant countries around him.
- He can get the divorce he wanted from Catherine of Aragon and get a male heir.
- If he doesn’t, he’ll be stuck with Catherine forever and he might never be able to get a male heir.
Cons:
- If he does, he will be upsetting many of his subjects because the country is currently catholic.
- He will have upset the catholic countries, making enemies with powerful countries such as Spain.
- He will become an enemy of the Catholic Church.
Why did Henry commission someone to paint the Field of the Cloth of Gold?
The painting was commissioned to show Henry’s foreign policy with France.
Was Henry’s foreign policy a success or a failure?
Success:
- He spent 15,000 pounds on the event (4.5 million in today’s money). This showed wealth and power.
- He bought 5,000 people with him and consumed about 2200 sheep. This showed his popularity and power.
Failure:
- France and England were at war again only three years after the foreign policy was put in place.
What is a Heretic?
A person holding an opinion at odds with what is generally accepted.
What was the reformation?
-> A sixteenth-century movement for the reform of abuses in the Roman Catholic Church ending up in the establishment of the Protestant church.
What changes did Edward VI make to the church?
