Tubes, Additives and Tests Flashcards
Lavender top tube contains
EDTA aka Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid
EDTA function
inhibits coagulation by binding to calcium present in the specimen.
How much should the lavender tube be filled?
The tube must be filled at least 2/3 full
How many times should you invert the lavender tube?
8 times
What are the common tests for lavender top tubes?
Hematology tests such as:
CBC (Complete Blood Count); Includes: RBC count, WBC count and Platelet count; WBC differential count; Hemoglobin and Hematocrit
determinations; ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate); Sickle Cell Screening
Lavender top tubes Indicated to test for
whole blood
Light-Blue top tube contains
Contains the anticoagulant Sodium Citrate
Tubes used for anticoagulant blood tests
tubes used are those with light blue, green, gray, dark blue, and lavender or pink stoppers.
Sodium Citrate function
prevents coagulation by binding to calcium in the specimen.
Light Blue top tube used for
coagulation studies because it preserves the coagulation factors
How much should you fill the light blue top tube?
The tube must be filled completely to maintain the ratio of nine parts blood to one part sodium citrate
How many times should the light blue top tube be inverted?
should be inverted three to four times..
What are common tests for the light blue top tubes?
Coagulation Studies- Prothrombin Time (PT) – evaluates the extrinsic; system of the coagulation cascade and monitors; Coumadin therapy; Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT, PTT) - Evaluates the intrinsic system of the coagulation cascade and monitors Heparin therapy. Fibrinogen Degradation Products (FDP) Thrombin Time (TT); Factor assays, Bleeding Time (BT)
Green top tube contains
Contains the anticoagulant Heparin combined with sodium, lithium, or ammonium ion.
Function of Heparin
Anticoagulant that works by inhibiting thrombin in the coagulation cascade
Common tests for the green top tube
It is not used for hematology because heparin interferes with the Wright‟s stained blood smear.
Chemistry tests: performed on plasma such as Ammonia, carboxyhemoglobin & STAT electrolytes
Common tests for the green top tube
It is not used for hematology because heparin interferes with the Wright‟s stained blood smear.
Chemistry tests: performed on plasma such as Ammonia, carboxyhemoglobin & STAT electrolytes
Gray top tube contains
Contains additives and anticoagulants. All gray top tubes contain glucose preservative (antiglycolytic agent): sodium fluoride- preserves glucose for 3days; or lithium iodoacetate- preserves glucose for 24 hours. May also contain the anticoagulant potassium oxalate, which prevents clotting by binding calcium.
Common tests for the gray top tube
Fasting blood sugar (FBS); Glucose tolerance test (GTT); Blood alcohol levels; Lactic acid measurement
Red/Gray (speckled) top tube known as
tiger-top tube and serum separator tubes (SST).
Red/Gray (speckled) top tube contains
Contain clot activators:
glass particles, silica and celite which hastens clot formation, and thixotropic gel, a serum separator which when centrifuged forms a barrier between the serum and the cells preventing contamination of the serum with cellular elements
How many times should you invert tiger top tube?
Tubes must be inverted five times.
Common tests of the Red/Gray (speckled) top tube
Most chemistry tests
Which tube should be inverted 3-4 times?
Light blue topped tube
Which tube should be inverted 5 times?
Tiger topped or gold topped tube
A Phlebotomist has a requisition to draw blood on a patient who has severe Downs yndrome. which of the following steps should the phlebotomist take?
Speak with the patient’s guardian before preforming the venipuncture to ensure the explanation is understood.
which of the following is an example of the acceptable reporting of routine lab results?
send the results to the physician in a marked envelope.
Which of the following procedural steps for a finger stick should the phlebotomist do first?
confirm the correct identity of the patient
A phlebotomist is drawing blood from a patient and observes a red spot. Which of the following is an appropriate action for the phlebotomist to take?
Apply pressure after collecting the specimen.
Which of the following is appropriate to use when collecting for a chemistry test that requires serum?
SST
A phlebotomist working in a fertility clinic draws blood from a patient who also must
submit a semen sample for analysis. Which of the following should the phlebotomist
tell the patient?
“As soon as you can collect the specimen, keep it next to your body. We will need to submit it right away for testing.”
Which of the following test results are affected when providone iodine is used to cleanse the state for a dermal puncture?
Potassium
