Tubes Flashcards
Become more familiar with the collection tubes
Yellow (SPS)
sterile specimen
LAB: microbiology
Light Blue
ADD: Sodium Citrate
LAB: coagulation tests; PTT for heparin, PT for coumadin or warfarin
must completely fill tubes
must have 9:1 ratio for blood to anticoagulant
decrease amount of anticoag if patient has polycythemia or elevated hematocrit
Red
LAB: Chemistry
Plastic tube = clot activator
Glass tube = “naked”
Can be used as discard tube
Gold
ADD: clot activator, gel (SST)
LAB: Chemistry
when spun serum is separated from clot with gel barrier in between
Tiger
ADD: clot activator, gel (SST)
LAB: Chemistry
when spun serum is separated from clot with gel barrier in between
Green (shamrock/Kelly)
ADD: sodium heparin
LAB: Chemistry
Light Green
ADD: sodium heparin, lithium heparin, ammonium heparin; plasma separator gel (PST)
LAB: Chemistry
Lithium heparin preserves cell elements when used
Lavender
ADD: K EDTA
LAB: hematology, CBC
gives whole blood
K EDTA used because maintains cell integrity, inhibits platelet clumping, doesn’t interfere with routine staining procedures
Gray
ADD: sodium fluoride (to preserve glucose for 24 hours), potassium oxalate
LAB: Chemistry, alcohol, glucose, lactate
Royal Blue
ADD: EDTA, clot activator
LAB: Chemistry, trace elements, toxicology
tubes are guaranteed to be trace element free
Yellow (ACD)
ADD: ACD (acid citrate dextrose)
LAB: blood bank
