The scientific study of heredity.
Hereditary
The passage of genetic instructions from one generation to the next generation.
Gregor Mendel
The study of genetics began with observations
made by Gregor Mendel. An Austrian monk,
born in 1822, who carried out work with various
plants that contributed to the understanding of
genetics
Allele
The diferent forms of a gene
Gene
A sequence of DNA that determines a
trait and is passed from parent to ofspring
Traits
A speciic characteristic that an
organism can pass to its ofspring through
its genes
Dominant allele
An allele
whose trait shows up in the
organism when the allele is
present
Recessive allele
An allele that
is hidden whenever the
dominant allele is present
Phenotype
An organism’s
physical appearance, or visible
traits (the physical
appearance)
Genotype
A set of alleles that
determines the expression of a
trait (the genes)
