Tsunamis Flashcards
How fast can a tsunami travel?
800km/hour
What is a tsunami?
A giant wave or waves caused by an earthquake or volcanic eruption on the sea bed.
What happens when the wave nears land?
It slows and increases in height (up to 15 metres)
What caused the earthquake and tsunami?
The outer crust of the earth is made of plates. When they grind together, they cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Why were the effects of the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 so serious?
It was a powerful earthquake, many coastal areas were low-lying, many areas were densely populated, it occurred during the main tourist season and there was no early warning system or disaster plan.
What were the effects of the tsunami?
Dead and missing people, injured people, homeless people, jobs lost, reconstruction costs, economic impact.
What are the differences between poorer and developed countries coping with a tsunami?
Disasters affect poor countries more than rich countries because: Poorer countries can’t predict so well. Poorly prepared rescue workers, not enough ambulances and doctors, poorly constructed buildings, shortage of emergency supplies.
How did the world help cope with the tsunami?
Food, blankets, tents, water, medical supplies, money, trained people (doctors, nurses).
What 3 phases of help occur after a disaster?
- Emergency relief (medical aid)
- Short term aid (food and shelter)
- Long term aid (repairing roads and buildings)
How can tsunami danger be reduced?
Preparation and planing (an early warning system, better building regulations to strengthen buildings, educate people, train emergency staff, stock emergency supplies)
