Beginning: low angle shot looking up at him bc Tsotsi is the leader and has the power
End: High angle shot looking down on him showing that he isn’t the leader in the situation
- and God is looking down on him
The baby
when the baby starts to cry he cares for it instead of running away
- shows he cares
- he’s a changed man
Idea of masculinity
The idea of masculinity changes:
opening: violent, gang culture, swearing, etc
POWER IS MASCULINE
closing: he cries, motherly, white shirt instead of leather jacket
Clothing
Tsotsi wears a white shirt:
- symbolises purity and new beginnings
- links to Christ
The gates at the rich couple’s house
They represent the barriers between rich and poor
- the social barrier is now a physical barrier
Barriers: separation of rich and poor
On one side there’s criminality:
- police
- guns
- crime
- Tsotsi
and on the other side there’s the respectable rich family
Power
power is with the rich family and not the police or Tsotsi
Music
Music turns harmonious and angelic when Tsotsi hands back the baby
Tsotsi’s emotions
He begins to cry showing that he cares.
The baby was his only connection to the rich lifestyle and now it has been taken away from him
