TSD RTG Observ. Of Signals Flashcards
Bi directional definition
Allowing for normal movement of rail traffic in either direction according to the infrastructure and system of safe working in use
Controlled speed
A speed that allows rail traffic to stop short of an obstruction within half the distance of clear line that is visible ahead
Railway track signal definition
A device attached to a rail that explodes on impact, used to attract attention of rail traffic crews
Restricted speed definition
A speed that allows rail traffic to stop short of an obstruction within half the distance of clear line that is visible ahead, restricted speed must not exceed 25km/h
Unidirectional
Allowing for normal travel in one direction only according to the infrastructure and system of safe-working in use
Wrong side system failure definition
A failure in the signalling system which causes a potentially dangerous situation to exist.
Examples of Wrong side system failure
- rail traffic not detected by the signalling system
- rail traffic is approaching and crossing a level crossing and the flashing lights and/or boom gates fail to operate
- proceed signal is displayed where a stop signal should be displayed
What is a running signal?
Signals mainly used to authorise running movements but may also be used for shunting movements
Hand, hand held flag and light signals and radio communication are used when:
- an additional signal is required
- necessary to give right away
- an emergency exists
Difference between controlled and non-controlled signals
Controlled
- automatically set at stop
- NCO controls/sets
Non-controlled
- automatically set at proceed
- movement of trains controls
Rail traffic signals are used to:
- indicate the front and rear of rail traffic (x2 red lights at rear, x2 white lights at front)
- indicate rail traffic is complete
Rail traffic can only pass a signal at stop when authorised by:
- NCO or the OIC if the local control panel is in operation
Describe Approach side
The worker must be looking in the direction of an able to see the aspect of the signal
Departure side
The worker, when looking at the signal can only see the back of it
Rightaway signals must be given where:
- Rail traffic is stopped for station duties
- passenger train is stopped at a platform or station
