Truth Flashcards
Truth
a property of only propositions
correspondence theory
a proposition is true iff there is a fact corresponding with it: Elementary propositions are configurations of terms (A); atomic facts are configurations of simple objects (B) –> A = B –> truth
This is a realist theory: the world exists independently of our claims
Coherence theory
proposition is true iff it coheres with a chosen system of propositions
Coherence of two concepts: logical consistency + strong system om proposition
Verificationist theory
A proposition is true iff it is in principle verifiable
this is subject to our epistemic capibilities
pragmatist theory
A proposition is ture iff it wil form part of the body of assertions adopted at the conclusion of a tradition of inquiry
deflationist theories
truth is not a property shared by propositions, it is merely an expressive function
