As a consequence of the controlled power Christof has, Truman is willing to resist against his unease around water and attempt to sail away from Seahaven in return for freedom. When Christof repeatedly demands to “Increase the wind. Increase the wind!” in order to make the storm more treacherous, Truman directly responds with, “Is that the best you can do!? You are gunna hafta’ KILL ME!

Truman is manipulated to experience aquaphobia which stemmed from the staged tragedy of his fathers death which Truman accepts was his fault. The strategic planting of the derelict boat floating in the water using the high angle shot, accompanied by the non diegetic music reveals Truman’s fear of water to the external audience for the first time,

Christof’s control on Truman is extended further as he asserts this behaviour onto the actors, when Meryl states “Oh look Truman, the happiest day of our lives’’ - irony

Truman discovers Meryl crossing her fingers in one of the photos from their wedding day, as the camera zooms into the photo non diegetic music accompanies this, creating tension and suspicion.
