Short Jacking Operations

A

If one side is short jacked, you cannot work off the short side, only the full side
If both sides are short jacked, one can only raise and lower out of cradle
Short jacked side needs to be extended far enough to remove pins and insert them

Q

Aerial Controls (at tip)

A

Red momentary switch (remote aerial master) dead man engaged
Tip controls are 33% slower than pedestal controls
RAMP system applies
Rider must wear truck belt and secure himself to laces of ladder (not rungs or K braces)
Feet must be on pads
No leg locking
Rider is not to extend or retract the ladder if foot pads are within 10 feet of upper mid bed

Q

Rear Stabilizer Control Hatch (with EPU)

A

For stabilizers
“Multiplexed” switch that is powered by electronic computer
When used with rear stabilizer controls all safety envelopes are still being utilized

Q

Hatch behind drivers side access ladder (with EPU)

A

For Ladder and Stabilizers
“Hydraulic” switch is hardwired to battery and hydraulic system
If the electronic “multiplex” system has failed, the EPU switch is the hatch behind the drivers side aerial access ladder will be the only one functioning

*When used with hydraulic override valves on turntable and side access hatches the aerial operates with no safety envelopes

Q

Global Override (rear stabilizer control hatch)

A

Will bypass all safety envelopes in “multiplex” system
Used to get out of trouble only
When in use, “multiplex” records conditions of all sensors to hard drive

16
Q

Why do we extend all 4 outriggers?

A

All other units coming will have to work around apparatus

17
Q

How should pins be placed on stabilizers?

A

From inside out, if apparatus is on a slope, pins may be placed from outside in (on downhill side)

18
Q

How should you approach a trapped victim when moving an aerial ladder?

A

From Above

19
Q

Where should the tip of the aerial ladder be placed for rescue at a windowsill?

A

Even with the windowsill

20
Q

How far should an aerial ladder be extended so that personnel working on a roof can safely mount and dismount the ladder?

A

6 feet above the roof level

21
Q

What is the ideal stream for exposure protection?

A

Fog

22
Q

What stream is best for windy conditions?

A

Solid

23
Q

What is the best approach when ventilating a roof with a tall parapet?

A

Use a roof ladder to access the roof from the top of the parapet

24
Q

When is it acceptable to omit the use of stabilizer pads?

A

It is not acceptable to omit the use of stabilizer pads

25
Q

What does short jacking do to the base of the stability?

A

It narrows it

26
Q

As ladder deployment angle decreases, what happens to the stress on the ladder?

A

Increases

27
Q

Deployment in strong winds, extension without support on the extended end, full extension, and nozzle reaction from elevated streams are all examples of what?

A

Stresses on the aerial device

28
Q

Which apparatus is placement the most critical?

A

Aerial apparatus

29
Q

What should you never do with a master stream in structural firefighting?

A

Never direct a master stream into a structure if crews are inside

30
Q

What should you do if your apparatus comes in contact with an energized electrical line?

A

Jump clear of the apparatus

31
Q

What is the best apparatus placement for roof ventilation?

A

Unburned side, as close as possible to the work site

32
Q

How should you position a mid-mount aerial ladder apparatus for aerial operation on an uphill grade?

A

Front bumper pointed uphill, downhill of the building

33
Q

What is the minimum clearance that should be maintained between an aerial device and overhead electrical lines?

A

10 feet

34
Q

What is the proper movement when positioning an aerial ladder?

A

Raise, Rotate, Extend, Lower into building
