tropospheric ozone and carbon monoxide Flashcards
1
Q
what are the effects of tropospheric ozone
A
- toxic to plants = reduces growth rates of trees and agricultural crops
- difficulty breathing and increases asthma rates
- production of secondary pollutants in photochemical smogs and acid rain
2
Q
what are the sources of tropospheric ozone
A
- a secondary pollutant produced by photochemical reactions involving oxides of nitrogen
1) nitrogen dioxide broken down by UV light into nitrogen monoxide and oxygen
2) the oxygen reacts with O2 forming O3
3
Q
how can tropospheric ozone be controlled
A
- levels can be controlled by limiting the primary pollutants that produce it ie catalytic converters, urea sprays ect
4
Q
what is carbon monoxide
A
produced when carbon-based materials are burnt in a shortage of oxygen ie incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons
5
Q
what are the effects of carbon monoxide
A
- binds to haemoglobin and prevents the carrying of o2 from lungs to the tissues of the body= brain damage/ death
- low conc- increases chances of chronic heart disease
6
Q
how can carbon monoxide be reduced
A
catalytic converters- oxides carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide
