Adaptation
A feature of a plant or animal’s body which helps it to survive.
Benefit
Something that is good that happens as a result of something else – an advantage
Biodiversity
The number and variety of species (plants and animals) found within a particular place.
Biome
A large scale global ecosystem e.g. tropical rainforest.
Commercial
Something that is done to make money (profit)
Cost
Something that is bad that happens as a result of something else - a disadvantage
Debt Reduction
Poorer countries no longer have to pay back the money they owe to richer countries or organisations.
Deforestation
Cutting down trees /forest.
Ecosystem
A natural environment which contains plants and animals that interact with each other and with their environment.
Ecotourism
Tourism that tries to protect (or reduce damage to) the environment as much as possible and benefits local people.
Exploitation
The action of making use and benefiting from a resource.
Indigenous people
The original people of a place. Some indigenous groups still live in the way they have for a very long time
Latitude
How far north or south of the equator a place is.
Nutrient
A chemical substance which is needed for plants to stay healthy, for example calcium.
Nutrient Cycle
The continuous movement of nutrients between parts of an ecosystem.
