Tropical Monsoon Flashcards
What kind of climate is the Topical Monsoon?
- Warm all months
2. High total rainfall, but very seasonal, distinct weather
What causes a monsoon?
Shift from onshore to offshore air flow (as regional-scale pressure changes)
Where are Tropical Monsoon Climates found?
They are always coastal or near coastal climates (e.g. w coastal southern india, w coast SE Asia, parts of coastal Africa and Brazil)
What are some endangered tropical monsoon animals?
Tigers (Bengal, Indochinese, Chinese, Siberian, Sumatran) and Rhinos (Javan, Sumatran, Indian)
Why is there a decline in Rhinos?
Poaching (want their horns), habitat destruction
What is really important in monsoon climates?
Agriculture
What crops are important in tropical monsoon climates
Like in the tropical rain forest, tropical fruits and vegetables are important crops in Tropical monsoon climates
What is life like in monsoons?
Flooding is an annual event and expected - just a part of “normal” life
What kind of forests are in tropical monsoon biomes, and what are they similar to?
Tropical season forest: broadleaf evergreen and deciduous (lose leaves) trees.
The tropical monsoon forests are similar to the TRF biome, but with a few more deciduous trees, depending on length and intensity of dry season.
What is the cause of the drastic decline in tiger species?
poaching, habitat destruction, and prey reduction
What is monsoon agriculture strongly linked to?
Wet/dry cycles
What are some major export crops from tropical monsoon climates?
rice, cotton, sugar cane
