TROPICAL CYCLONES (PART I) Flashcards
What are the four (4) parts of a Tropical Cyclones?
Eye
Eyewall
Inner Rainbands
Outer Rainbands
What is a Coriolis Effect?
It’s a pseudo-force created by Earth’s rotation and relatively week at the Equator but increases as it nears
to the poles.
What is Intertropical Convergence Zone?
It is the region that circles the Earth, near the equator, where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together
What are the seven tropical cyclone “basins” where storms occur on a regular basis?
- Atlantic basin (North Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, & Caribbean Sea)
- Northeast Pacific basin (Mexico to about the dateline)
- Northwest Pacific basin the (from dateline to Asia including the South China Sea)
- North Indian basin (Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea)
- Southwest Indian basin (Africa to about 100E)
- Southeast Indian/Australian basin (100E to 142E)
- Australian/Southwest Pacific basin (142E to about 120W)
What is a Tropical Cyclones?
It’s a global generic term for an intense circulating weather system over tropical seas and oceans.
It has low atmospheric pressure, strong winds, & heavy rains.
Tropical Cyclones
What are the favorable conditions for TC formation?
Warm sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of at least 26.5°C with a depth of 45 meters. The heat from the sea is the main energy source for TCs.
