Q

What do we mean by “person?”

A

We say person to distinguish, but not separate the persons of the Trinity, who are the same essence.

“Person is used metaphysically rather than psychologically or subjectively” (Sanders, 141).

Q

What is Arianism and Seballianism?

A

“Arius held that the Father alone was the eternal and true God, inasmuch as He alone in the full sense of the word was unregenerated.” Arianism denies that all of the persons of God are on the “God side,” only sees the Father as truly Divine, which the Son / Spirit implies separate/division of being

Sabellius held that Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were but three names for one and the same God” (Bavinck, 139). Denies any real distinction between the divine persons in the internal life of God, and the names of God are modes of revelation of the One God

Q

What does it meant that “the One is Three from the perspective of their properties?”

A

Although God has no separation of essence and attributes, the persons of the Trinity are distinguished by their relations of origin, nothing else.

One cannot distinguish God by his economic actions since his operations are inseparable.

Q

What’s the relationship between the economic and immanent Trinity?

A

The economic sendings/missions of the Trinity reveal the eternal/immanent Trinity.

Define Omnipresent

A

God’s immutability in respect to space

17
Q

Why do we need the rule of redoublement?

A

Considering the distinctions between Father, Son, and Spirit as
constitutive of the One God requires “repetitive” description or
“redoublement”

18
Q

What do we mean by essence?

A

Essence became a synonym for nature and describes the one divine essence, the Godhead in general, which makes God distinct from all creaturely existence and possessing all the incommunicable attributes, exisiting IN the divine persons and not differentiating between them.

19
Q

What do we know of God?

A

God is the one creator, governer and sustainer. Transcendent and distinct from creation but immanently related to it.

20
Q

What is the relation between the essence and the person?

A

“[T]he distinction between being and person and between the persons
among themselves cannot lie in any substance but only in their mutual
relations.” Bavinck, RD, 304

21
Q

What are the distinguishing personal properties of Father, Son, and Spirit?

A

*Father: “unbegottenness,” active generation, active spiration (Eph3:14)
*Son: “eternal begottenness” or eternal
sonship, passive generation, active spiration (John5:26)
*Spirit: passive spiration or procession (Acts2:33)
