Define trigeminal neuralgia
A
Neuralgia involving 1+ branches of the trigeminal nerves, often causing severe pain

Aetiology of trigeminal neuralgia
A
Due to compression of trigeminal nerve by loop pf artery or vein
(5-10% due to tumours, MS, skull base abnormalities)

More common in females
Prevalence increases with age (50-60 yrs peak)

Pain - Sudden Unilateral Brief (secs to mins) Stabbing (“shock-like”) Recurrent
Periods of remission vary
Some experience preceding symptoms (e.g numbness, tingling)
