Trigeminal Nerve: Opthalmic Division Flashcards
What does the trigeminal nerve provide?
Provides all the pain & proprioceptive (orientation in space) fibers to the face, scalp, jaws, and muscles.
V1 or Ophthalmic courses through?
superior orbital fissure-to- orbit
V2 or maxillary courses through?
foramen rotundum-to- pterygopalatine fossa
V3 or mandibular courses through?
foramen ovale-to- infratemporal fossa
Afferent is
sensory fibers that carry impulses towards the brain
Efferent is
motor fibers that carry impulses away from the brain
Is the trigeminal nerve specialized to either motor/or sensory?
CN5 is 1 of 4 CN that carries both motor & sensory fibers (is not specialized, carries both)
Where is CN5 located?
Is attached to the sides of anterior surface of the pons (pons at posterior cranial fossa)
Why is CN5 the largest?
made of 2 roots, a large sensory, and small motor
What is the bulge/bump of CN5?
It’s the paired trigeminal ganglion sitting in trigeminal ganglion fossa
What are the 3 divisions off the Trigeminal Ganglion?
Ophthalmic, Maxillary, & Mandibular
Where are the cell bodies of the sensory fibers located?
Located at the Trigeminal Ganglion
What are GSA (general somatic afferent fibers) ?
Trigeminal sensory fibers carrying impulses to brain
What is the function of GSA fibers?
Provide sensation of pain/temp./touch/proprioception
Where are the cell bodies of the motor fibers located?
Located at the motor nucleus of the brain
