Trigeminal Nerve: Opthalmic Division Flashcards
What does the trigeminal nerve provide?
Provides all the pain & proprioceptive (orientation in space) fibers to the face, scalp, jaws, and muscles.
V1 or Ophthalmic courses through?
superior orbital fissure-to- orbit
V2 or maxillary courses through?
foramen rotundum-to- pterygopalatine fossa
V3 or mandibular courses through?
foramen ovale-to- infratemporal fossa
Afferent is
sensory fibers that carry impulses towards the brain
Efferent is
motor fibers that carry impulses away from the brain
Is the trigeminal nerve specialized to either motor/or sensory?
CN5 is 1 of 4 CN that carries both motor & sensory fibers (is not specialized, carries both)
Where is CN5 located?
Is attached to the sides of anterior surface of the pons (pons at posterior cranial fossa)
Why is CN5 the largest?
made of 2 roots, a large sensory, and small motor
What is the bulge/bump of CN5?
It’s the paired trigeminal ganglion sitting in trigeminal ganglion fossa
What are the 3 divisions off the Trigeminal Ganglion?
Ophthalmic, Maxillary, & Mandibular
Where are the cell bodies of the sensory fibers located?
Located at the Trigeminal Ganglion
What are GSA (general somatic afferent fibers) ?
Trigeminal sensory fibers carrying impulses to brain
What is the function of GSA fibers?
Provide sensation of pain/temp./touch/proprioception
Where are the cell bodies of the motor fibers located?
Located at the motor nucleus of the brain
What are SVE (special visceral efferent fibers) ?
Trigeminal motor fibers carry impulses away from brain
What is the function of SVE fibers?
Provide motor function to muscles
V1 Ophthalmic (smallest/sensory) carries sensation to…
Carries sensation from scalp, eye, skin of forehead, eyelid, and nose
What is the Trigeminal Ganglion, also known as,
Semilunar Ganglion
V3 is…
largest, has large sensory/small motor, sensory initially then course ovale to unite
The 3 divisions of V1, Ophthalmic
Lacrimal, Frontal, Nasociliary
What does the sub-divison Lacrimal Nerve (smallest) supply?
Supplies sensory to Lacrimal Gland
What are the sub/sub-divisions of the Frontal Nerve (largest)
Supraorbital Nerve, Supratrochlear Nerve
What does the sub/sub-divison Supraorbital Nerve (larger of 2) supply/course through?
Supplies upper eyelid, forehead, anterior scalp region, Leaves orbit through supraorbital notch/foramen
What does the sub/sub-divison Supratrochlear Nerve supply/course through?
Supplies upper eyelid, lower medial portion of forehead, Leaves orbit by passing over supraorbital margin.
What does the sub-divison Nasociliary Nerve (main eye nerve) supply?
Supplies eye and lateral surface of nose
