Trigeminal nerve Flashcards
What are the 3 main divisions of the trigeminal nerve?
Ophthalmic (V1)
Maxillary (V2)
Mandibular (V3)
The 3 branches of the trigeminal nerve arise from the trigeminal ganglion. Where is the trigeminal ganglion situated?
middle cranial fossa of the skull
Where do each of the 3 branches exit the skull?
superior orbital fissure
foreman rotundum
foreman ovale
Where do each of the 3 branches of the trigeminal nerve go when the exit the skull?
orbit
pterygopalatine fossa
infratemporal fossa
What is the function of the ophthalmic branch?
general sensory information from the upper eyelid, cornea, conjunctiva, forehead, scalp and part of the nasal cavity
What is the function of the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve?
general sensory information from the lower eyelid, cheek, side of nose, part of the nasal cavity, upper lip, hard and soft palate and maxillary teeth and gingivae
What is the function of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve?
- general sensory to the anterior 2/3 of tongue, temporoauricular skin, side of nose, lower lip, chin and mandibular teeth and gingivae.
- motor innervation to the muscles of mastication
What are the branches of the ophthalmic nerve?
the ophthalmic nerve branches off into the frontal nerve, lacrimal nerve and the nasocillary nerve.
- the frontal nerve branches of to the supraorbital nerve and the supratrochlear nerve
- the lacrimal nerves innervates the lacrimal gland
- the nasocillary nerve branches off into the posterior and anterior ethmoidal nerves, long ciliary nerves and the infratrochlear nerve
