Trigeminal nerve 1 Flashcards
Importance of CN5?
Motor to the muscles of mastication (V3)
Sensory to most of the face.
Huge clinical importance, e.g. shingles, trigeminal neuralgia
Target of LA analgesia
Where does CN5 emerge?
visual characteristics at this point?
- CNV emerges from the pons (part of the brainstem)
- Large sensory root and smaller motor root
- Sensory root forms the trigeminal ganglion
Trigeminal ganglion?
Formed by the sensory root
Motor root joins V3 after exiting the skull
Ganglion conveys sensations of pain, temperature, touch, proprioception, and pressure from skin, muscles, TMJ, mucous membranes, and teeth
Relevance of the artery near the CN5 ganglion
Clinically can cause of Trigeminal neuralgia by pression on the trigeminal ganglion - sensory region
causes sharp stabbing pain
Ophthalmic nerve
Branches before exiting superior orbital fissure
General sensation to orbit, eye, nasal cavity, forehead
Completely sensory nerve
