Trigeminal neoplasia Flashcards
1
Q
Prevalence
A
- uncommon in dogs but will be seen in practice
2
Q
CS
A
- progressive head asymmetry secondary to atrophy of the temporal and master muscle unilaterally
- if invades through foraminae with compression of the brainstem will show progressive brainstem signs (i.e. unilateral proprioceptive deficits)
- it is not uncommon for O to report sudden onset asymmetry in fluffy dogs as they hadn’t noticed it previously
- usually slow growing and if not compressing brainstem then effectively an incidental finding
- many dogs will outlive their trigeminal tumours
3
Q
Diagnosis
A
- confirmed on advanced imaging +/- CSF
- without advanced imaging: need to do detailed CN exam to confirm only 1 trigeminal is affected, sensory deficits from the trigeminal will also be present
4
Q
Tx
A
- no effective tx, but may not be needed if brainstem unaffected
