Trigeminal and Associated Nerves Flashcards
What nerve provides general sensory to the lateral upper eyelid, lacrimal gland and some conjunctiva?
Lacrimal nerve (branch of Opthalmic division V1) *contains post-ganglionic parasympathetic fibers from pterygopalatine ganglion going to lacrimal gland originating in the Facial nerve
What nerve provides general sensory to the skin of the UPPER eyelid, forehead and and scalp?
Supraorbital nerve (<–V1)
What are the three main branches of V1?
Lacrimal, frontal and nasocilliary nerves
What nerve provides general sensory to MEDIAL part of upper eyelid, forehead and scalp?
Supratrochlear nerve (frontal nerve<–V1)
What are the four main branches of the nasocilliary nerve?
long cilliary, posterior ethmoid, anterior ethmoid and infratrochlear nerves
What provides general sensory innervation to the eyeball?
long ciliary nerves (they contain post-ganglionic sympathetic fibers from the carotid plexus going to the dilator pupillae muscle)
What nerve provides general sensory innervation to sphenoid sinus, ethmoid air cells and nasal cavity?
Posterior ethmoid nerve (<–V1)
What nerve provides general sensory innervation to the ethmoid air cells and nasal cavity?
Anterior ethmoidal nerve (<–V1)
What is the branch of the anterior ethmoidal nerve that provides general sensory to the bridge of the nose?
External nasal branch (<–V1)
What nerve provides general sensory innervation to the medial upper eyelid and lacrimal sac?
Infratrochlear nerve (<–V1)
What is the ganglion for the parasympathetic synapses of the occulomotor nerve?
Cilliary ganglion (located in the orbit with V1)
What are some of the additional fibers that pass through the cilliary ganglion?
Post-ganglionic sympathetic fibers and sensory fibers from the nasocilliary nerve
What are the main branches of the trigeminal nerve in the pterygopalatine fossa?
Posterior superior alveolar, zygomatic, greater palatine, lesser palatine, nasopalatine, posterior lateral nasal and pharyngeal nerves
What are the branches of the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve in the infraorbital canal?
Infraorbital nerve which branches to middle superior alveolar (MSA) and anterior superior alveolar (ASA) nerves
What are the terminal branches of V2?
inferior palepbral, lateral nasal and superior labial nerves
Pterygopalatine ganglia (location)
It is located in the pterygopalatine fossa with V2 and actually hangs down from V2. It is the ganglion for parasympathetic synapses of the facial nerve VII.
Other fibers that can pass through the pterygopalatine ganglia include…
post-ganglionic sympathetic fibers and sensory fibers from greater palatine, lesser palatine and sphenopalatine nerves and taste fibers from the facial nerve
What nerve provides general sensory innervation to the maxillary sinus, maxillary molars, gingiva and bone?
Posterior superior alveolar nerve
