what are the 3 sections of a hair strand?

-Medulla (middle)

what are the 3 different types of hair and there descriptions?
-Lanugo; fine, silky, baby hair shed shortly after birth
-Vellus; thin, short, non-pigmented
-Terminal; long, thick, pigmented hair, usually on scalp, eyebrows etc
name the 3 stages of hair growth and describe
-Anagen; active growing stage
-Catagen; brief transition period when all cell division stops
-Telogen; hair dies
name 2 conditions that affect hair growth
-Hirsutism; terminal hair found of women where it usually grows for men (beard)
-Hypertrichosis; abnormal coverage on hair where usually lanugo hairs appear
what are the factors that affect hair growth?
Congenital, Hormonal or Topical, Medical disorders and Medication
what are melanocytes?
cells that exist among the dividing cells within the hair follicle
describe the natural colouring process for hair
Melanin is produced by melanocytes which rest near the hair bulb’s nourishment centre, the dermal papilla, and form bundles of a pigment protein called Melanosomes. Genes determine the amount to use for pigment.
what are the 2 melanins for hair colour?
Eumelanin- brown/ black
Pheomelanin- red/yellow
why does hair grow grey when ageing?
your hair naturally grows grey in the cortex, with melanin making the hair a different colour, as we grow old our body no longer produces melanin for our hair so it grows out its natural colour
