Major body system assessment
Cardiovascular
Respiratory
Neuro
Heart rate changes in shock
Dogs: tachycardia (160-200)
Cats: bradycardia (100-140)
Pulse quality in shock
Diastolic pressure starts to fall, so bigger difference between pressures and pulse feels stronger
Then systolic pressure starts to fall so so pressure difference smaller and pulse gets weaker and weaker
MM and CRT in shock
If pale: anaemic, vaso-constricting due to shock, big concern
Congested: sepsis
Respiratory system assessment
Dyspnoea
Only really need to listen to the middle third of the thorax - on both sides
Upper airway localisation
Inspiratory effort
No stethoscope
Lower airway localisation
Expiratory effort
Wheezes on auscultation
Pulmonary localisation
Variable resp pattern
Harsh sounds or crackles on auscultation
Pleural space localisation
Shallow breathing
Dull and distant lung and heart sounds
Neuro system assessment
Decreased conciousness
Seizures
Don’t do a neuro exam at this time
Just make sure of normal conciousness and whether or not it’s seizuring
