Brown MM
Methimoglobinemia
Acetaminophen in cats
Reason for difficulty hearing heart sounds
Obesity
Pericardial effusion
Pleural effusion
Asynchronous breathing
Chest and abdomen move opposite of each other
(Extrathoracic pathology/pleural space)
Synchronous breathing
Chest and abdomen move together
(intrathoracic pathology)
Pulsus paradoxis
Pulse volume appears to decrease during inspiration and become normal during expiration
(pericardial effusion/tamponade)
Kussmaul breathing
Slow, very deep breathes. Seen with DKA, severe metabolic acidosis
CRT < 1 second
Vasodilation, fever, sepsis, anaphylaxis
What can cause bradycardia?
Athleticism
Shock (cats)
Anemia
GA/sedation/medications
Increased ICP
Bradyarrythmia
Electrolyte imbalances
What can cause tachycardia?
Shock
Anemia
Toxins
Tachyarrythmias
Hypercapnia
Need to urinate
Pain/anxiety
Hypoxemia
Pulsus Alternans
Alternating small and large volume pulses
(Left ventricular heart failure)
Restrictive breathing pattern
short, shallow rapid breaths
Stridor
Abnormal high pitched noise (upper airway obstruction)
Stertor
Abnormal low pitched noise (lower airway obstruction)
CRT > 2seconds
vasoconstriction, poor peripheral perfusion
Pulse deficits
Suggests arrythmia
