Trends within the periodic table Flashcards
1
Q
What is the density like of the metals in group 1?
A
Very low (the first few elements are less dense than water)
2
Q
What happens when the group 1 metals react with water?
A
They release hydrogen
3
Q
What happens as you go down group 1?
A
- The more reactive the element
- The lower the boiling/melting point
4
Q
What happens as you move down group 7 (the halogens)?
A
- The less reactive the element
- The higher its melting and boiling point
5
Q
Why are the trends in the periodic table present?
A
Because of the higher the energy of the outer shell of electrons.
-The more easily electrons are lost
The less easily electrons are gained
Because of the distance from the outer electron shell and the nucleus.
