Trends of the periodic table Flashcards
How do we organize the elements of the periodic table?
They go in ascending order of atomic number and we organize the elements by their similarities in periods and groups.
Which way do periods go?
Horizontal.
Which way do groups go?
Vertical.
What is the significance of the atomic number?
It tells us which element we are dealing with.
What is the significance of the atomic weight?
It allows us to identify how many protons and neutrons are in each element.
How are the periods in the periodic table organized?
Periods are organized by how many energy shells/levels are around the nucleus.
How are the groups organized in the periodic table?
Groups are organized by how many electrons the elements have in their outer shell.
What is group 1 of the periodic table?
Alkali Metals.
What is group 2 of the periodic table?
Alkaline Earth Metals.
What is group 7 of the periodic table?
Halogens.
What is group 8 of the periodic table?
Noble gases (inert gases)
Properties of Noble gases.
- very stable/unreactive
- become denser as the rows go down
Properties of Halogens.
- very reactive
Properties of Alkaline Earth Metals.
- low density
- soft silver metals
- ductile and malleable
- not as reactive as alkali metals
Properties of Alkali Metals.
- very reactive
- soft
- low density
