Trends in the Periodic Table Flashcards
What is electronegativity?
The strength in which an atom (or ion) holds onto it’s outer electrons.
How do we determine the electronegativity?
As you go to the right and higher^^ on the periodic table the electronegativity increases (the ability to hold onto outer atoms)
What changes are noted when the atoms have stronger electronegativity?
As the electronegativity changes as does the reactivity.
What happens to the zone of probability when the electronegativity is high?
The zone of probability (shells) is more congested as there is a higher pull force towards the centre of the atom.
How do you explain the trends in the periodic table?
The more protons the greater the positive charge in the nucleus, the higher the electronegativity.
As you travel to the right side of the table what happens to the atomic radius?
The atomic radius of the atoms gets smaller.
