Trends Flashcards
Reason for size trend?
There’s more electrons as you go across the table, thus more attraction of electrons to the nucleus. As you go down the table, there’s more electron energy levels, thus more shielding from the inner electrons.
Boiling point/Melting point trend?
Goes drastically up first, then back down, then up, etc.
Reason for melting boiling point weirdness?
Different compounds. Highest is carbon and silicon, because of covalent lattice bond. Drop from diatomic gases to noble gases because of configuration, there’s more than one atom existing together. Electrons matter a lot for metallic bonding.
LONDON DISPERSION FORCES.
Atomic radius definition
1/2 of the distance between two bonded atoms of the same element.
Ionization energy definition
Energy to take one mole of electrons from one mole of gaseous element.
Ionization energy trend?
IE increases as size decreases
Electron affinity definition?
Energy for one mole of gaseous atoms to gain one mole of electrons
Electron affinity trend?
Magnitude of electron affinity increases as size decreases, usually starts out negative.
Has many exceptions however.
Electronegativity definition?
Measure of an atoms ability to attract shared electrons. Relevant for compounds, but use as a measure of stuff anyways.
Electro negativity trend?
EN increases as size decreases.
General atomic size trend?
Size decreases as it goes from left to right.
Size increases as it goes down table.
