What is Battering?
Battering is the method of removal of the soil from the sides of a trench.
What is the Angle of Repose
Angle of repose is the minimum angle created by the spoil pile that naturally prevents the cave-in of earth and soil.
When can we use Battering?
The soil is unstable.
Working in running sand.
There is a massive cave-in involving both walls and spoil pile.
The conditions or an obstruction prevent entry of equipment.
What is Step Battering?
Step battering is the removal of soil from the sides of a trench in a manner that gives the sides a step-like appearance.
When can we use Step Battering?
Solid Ground like stiff Clay
Max vertical height of any section used in Step Battering?
must not exceed 1 meter.
Types of Ground Support Systems?
Box sets.
Soldier sets.
Soldier sets with timber panelling.
Closed sheeting vertical timber systems (more commonly referred to as closed sheeting).
What Soil types are Soldier sets appropriate for?
They are used in stiff clays or where soil types with properties similar to clay.
