tree planting Flashcards
before selecting a tree, what must you consider?
correct tree type for soil, location, ultimate height - space available seasonal interest susceptible to pest/diseases aftercare - deciduous? drainage
how large a hole should you dig for planting a tree?
dig a hole twice the width of the pot, but the same depth as the root ball.
why shouldn’t you dig over the bottom of the planting hole when planting a tree?
it can cause the tree to sink once planted - so use a fork to puncture the base and side (makes it friable?)
how do you check the trees planting depth?
remove the tree from its pot and put it in the hole.
Use a cane (lying horizontally across the hole and surrounding bed) to see if the rootball is at the same level or slightly above the soil
lift out the plant, and cut away any roots that are circling the rootball
describe the method of planting the tree once the hole is dug.
add well-rotted OM
tease out the roots
lower tree into the hole
water it well
As you back fill, water again to ensure there are no air pockets and there is no danger of the roots drying out
firm in gently - infill with a mix of shredded soil, peat or rotted garden compost.
Stake - a softwood stake at a 45’ angle into the prevailing wind (don’t damage rootball!)
fit tree tie
water (do this in dry spells for the first 2 years)
mulch around base but leave a space clear around the stem to prevent the bark rotting the stem
describe planting a bare rooted tree
we use the same method as for one in a container but -
bare rooted are only available from autumn to later winter and should be planted as soon as you get them (unless the soil is frozen)
If you cannot do this, find a patch of un-frozen soil, or fill a large pot with compost and heel them in.
It is important to ensure there are no air pockets when filling around the roots with soil
list some aftercare tasks for a newly planted tree
check for bark damage from squirrels/deer - may need to install a tree guard.
note trees growth - new shoots and leaves
Monthly you should check irrigation, ties, mulch and guards
Note any signs of fungal structures as indicators of disease.
