Q

War guilt

A

Although a simple clause, for Germans it was seen as very harsh as they didn’t believe they started or lost the war. However, they accepted the blame for starting the war.

Q

Impacts of the treaty:

A
  • Germany lost 12.5% of its populations and 16% of its coalfields and almost half its iron and steel industry.
  • Multiple revolutions were against Ebert and the treaty, like the Kapp Putsch.
  • Germany failed to pay their reparations in 1922, so in 1923 French and Belgian soldiers entered the Ruhr region and took what was owed to them in the form of raw materials and goods.
  • over 100 workers and expelled and over 100,000 protesters from the region.
  • Germany no longer had any goods to trade or money to buy things.
  • The government printed money which caused hyperinflation. The money was virtually worthless so prices shot up.
