Treaty Of Versailles Flashcards
Explain the territorial terms.
- Germans were outraged
- lost 13.5% of its land
- including Alsace-Lorraine
- also included were a number of important industrial areas
How did the nazis exploit the territorial terms and how did it gain support?
Used the anger and promised to regain all the lost territory.
Won support from nationalists because these promises offered a chance to restore some of their national pride which had been taken away by the treaty.
Explain the military terms.
Germans were angered by the military terms
Such as reducing the army to 100,000 volunteers
Believed it was designed to keep Germany permanently weakened and unable to defend itself.
How did the nazis exploit the military terms and how did this won support?
Nazis promised to rearm Germany and build up the army.
Won great support from the electorate and it could be argued that many Germans voted for the nazis in order to see a return to the tradition of a strong German military
Explain a special clause.
The special clauses contained within the treaty also outraged Germans, such as the war guilt clause, and the reparations bill of £6,600 million to be paid over 35 years, which was seen as an attempt to destroy the German economy and prevent her from ever rebuilding
What where the terms within the treaty of Versailles?
~ The territorial terms
~ Military terms
~ war guilt clause
How did the nazis exploit this and how did it gain support?
Hitler called the treaty a diktat and promised to refuse to pay reparations
Hitlers promise allowed Germany to become great again
However it can be argued that because reparation repayments didn’t destroy the economy or permanently weaken Germany that Germans were not tempted by nazi scaremongering
Evaluate the the treaty of Versailles
Treaty was despised by everyone
Historians compare this to Weimar signing its own death warrant
By promising to tear up the treaty, using stab in the back, to. Lame Weimar politicians
