What year was the Treaty of Versailles signed?
The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919.
Which countries were considered to be the ‘Big Three’ or the ‘Peacemakers’?
Britain, France and America. Sometimes Italy is also included.
What did Clemenceau and the French want out of the peace talks?
Revenge, demilitarisation of Germany and to crush their economy so that they could no longer be considered a threat. They were also keen to gain compensation in the form of reparations.
What did Woodrow Wilson want out of the peace talks?
The Fourteen Points, specifically self determination for all countries, freedom of the seas and a League of Nations to settle disputes.
What did the American people want out of the peace talks?
To avoid being dragged into America’s problems.
What did the British people want?
To punish Germany for the loss of their loved ones during the war. They voted for one MP who was quoted as saying that if he were elected he could squeeze Germany until the Pips Squeak.
What did David Lloyd George and the British politicians want from the Treaty of Versailles?
A settlement that would please the British public but also leave Germany strong enough to trade with Britain and buy their goods. A Germany that would be strong enough to fight off the communists.
