What is the treaty of tordesillas?
The Treaty of Tordesillas was an agreement signed in 1494 between Spain and Portugal, dividing the newly discovered lands outside of Europe between the two kingdoms by drawing an imaginary line in the Atlantic Ocean, essentially granting Spain the right to claim lands west of the line and Portugal the right to claim lands east of it, effectively determining their respective spheres of influence for colonization
