Treatment to reduce criminal(anti social) behaivour Flashcards
Explain how token economy programs work.
They are based on operant conditioning where the criminals are rewarded with tokens whenever they show prosocial behaviour, which is to cooperate with the prison staff, and these tokens are be exchanged with telephone calls, visits, food privileges and tv time
what needs to happen in order for the token economy program to work
These tokens are only effective when it is truly desired by the prisoners and should be given as soon as prisoners display prosocial behaivour.
1 strenght of token economy program
Tom Hobbs and Michael Holt found that in 3 prisons where token economy was introduced prosocial behaviour was increased compared to a control prison where token economy wasn’t introduced
1 weakness for token economy program
The treatment lacks validity as tokens are unlikely to reduce recidivism as similar tokens are not found in the real world so prosocial behaviour would only be limited to prison.
How anger management programs work
These programs work by having a therapy session with offenders who committed violent crimes due to their anger.
explain cognitive preparation in anger management program
Cognitive preparation;
where offenders reflect on their own anger and identify what makes them angry, why is makes them angry, and find out why being angry is counter productive
Explain Skill acquisition for anger management program
Skill acquisition;
offenders learn new skills to help them control their anger and learn relaxation and assertiveness techniques ( how they can show their point without resorting to anger)
Explain application practice in anger management programs
Application practice;
offenders role play practice their new skills in anger triggering situations to see how effective they are at controlling their anger
1 strength for anger management programs
Offenders are carefully selected to receive anger management programs based on their crimes
1 weakness of anger management programs
might be counter productive as Marine Rice suggested that psychopaths were more likely to reoffend and become more dangerous as they can use their new skills from the program to manipulate others more effectively
